Writing for impact

“Katherine was outstanding both as a feature writer with a human touch and as a news reporter clearly explaining complicated policy issues. She was also a wonderful colleague. This new endeavor for her matches perfectly her talents and experience.”

– Robert McCartney, retired Washington Post editor, correspondent and columnist

As a daily newspaper journalist for more than 25 years, I’ve covered everything from breaking news and Florida Man crime stories to magazine features and Washington, D.C.-based investigative analyses.

I’ve spent my entire career in journalism, starting at Princeton University’s student newspaper and most recently for 26 years at The Washington Post. My reporting and writing expertise includes transportation, infrastructure and urban planning issues, as well as real estate development, criminal justice, government and politics.

My specialty: Translating highly technical and potentially dry subjects into accessible and engaging stories for both lay and expert audiences.

I’ve explained how a major U.S. transit construction project ran billions of dollars over budget and revealed how the pandemic drastically altered U.S. commute patterns and suburban development. I’ve chronicled the transformation of U.S. suburbs into more walkable, transit-oriented communities. I’ve illuminated my mother’s decades-long quest to learn the fate of her first husband, a Navy pilot shot down during the Cold War. Other stories have included light-hearted looks at meditative commuting and the smelly world of clogged sewer systems

I now bring my journalism experience to organizations, nonprofits, foundations and government agencies seeking to reach their target audience with messages that get noticed amid the noise.

Research shows busy readers with ever-shortening attention spans typically skim or move on within seconds, if they click at all. That’s why I focus on capturing attention – and keeping it – through compelling storytelling, clear organization and crisp, concise writing.

It’s second nature for a veteran journalist to learn quickly, write vividly, make deadlines, research deeply,  ensure accuracy, and put interview subjects at ease. I listen closely for what clients need and am dependable, detail-oriented and enthusiastic.

After growing up in Arizona, I graduated cum laude from Princeton University with a bachelor’s in Politics. I now call the Washington, D.C. area home.
